On November 29th, the No. 1 ship of the world's first commercial 7,500-cubic-meter liquefied carbon dioxide carrier, built by CSSC's Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. for the Norwegian Northern Lights Company, was delivered.

This type of ship was independently designed and built by Dalian Shipbuilding, and it has completely independent intellectual property rights. The whole ship is equipped with two fully-pressurized C-type cargo tanks made of special materials for transporting carbon dioxide, which can withstand a low temperature of -35 °C. The main engine, configured with two fuels, liquefied natural gas and marine gas oil, enables the ship's emissions of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides to meet the strictest requirements. Multiple innovative technologies, such as rotor sails, air lubrication, main engine exhaust gas monitoring systems, and shaft generators, are applied, which can significantly reduce the emission levels and improve the energy-saving effect.

The successful delivery of this ship marks that Dalian Shipbuilding has overcome a series of technical challenges, including ship type optimization, cargo system design schemes, new energy-saving devices, large block lifting, and vibration and noise issues. It has mastered the design and construction technologies of large liquefied carbon dioxide carriers and consolidated the leading position of China's shipbuilding industry in the construction market of carbon dioxide carriers.

After its delivery, this ship will be applied to the European carbon dioxide capture and storage program. It will collect the carbon dioxide generated by European industries, transport it to the carbon dioxide receiving terminal wharf on the west coast of Norway, and then inject it into the seabed 2,600 meters underground for permanent storage after processing. As the world's first ship that is currently professionally dedicated to marine carbon transportation and storage, it will play a leading and exemplary role in the global model for solving land-based carbon dioxide emissions.
